THE ADVOCATE CELEBRATES 45 YEARS

THE ADVOCATE TO CELEBRATE THE HEROES AND CHAMPIONS IN THE LGBT COMMUNITY OVER THE PAST FOUR DECADES

February 15, 2012 (Los Angeles, CA) - The Advocate, the world’s leading gay news source, will celebrate its 45th anniversary this year with a gala event on Thursday, March 29th at The Beverly Hilton hotel’s world-renowned International Ballroom in Beverly Hills, CA. The Advocate 45th Presented by Lexus, which will benefit the Point Foundation, will honor the heroes and champions who have made significant strides in the LGBT community over the past 45 years.

“As a native of Los Angeles, the Black Cat Protest, from which The Advocate was born, has always been meaningful. Preserving The Advocate brand is an important part of our business, and, personally, an important part of my life,” says Paul Colichman, CEO of Advocate parent company Here Media. “For 45 years The Advocate has been the news source of record for the LGBT community. From its inception, The Advocate’s devoted staff of editors and writers have worked tirelessly to bring forward the issues affecting the lives of gay Americans. We look forward to celebrating the 45 years of hard work, sacrifice, and dedication it has taken to build the world’s leading gay news brand.”

In 1967 The Advocate was launched in an effort to educate and unite the LGBT community about unlawful arrests and bar raids. It soon became an indispensable and necessary resource for LGBT current events, culture, and activism within the community. Today as The Advocate celebrates its 45th anniversary it remains ahead of the curve — covering events and themes that often spur a cultural revolution.

The Advocate has evolved over the last 45 years, from a newsletter to a print and digital magazine, a website, and a mobile platform. And headlines have also evolved, from reports on bar raids and innumerable deaths from AIDS, to marriage equality, fairness in serving our country in the armed forces, and raising our families with dignity and acceptance,” says Matthew Breen, editor in chief of The Advocate. “I don’t think our founding editors, on whose shoulders we all stand, could have imagined the ways in which this publication would grow and develop to encompass a greater, stronger LGBT community. We look forward to another 45 years of singular dedication to telling the stories of our lives and our fight for equality.”

Lexus (www.lexus.com), the luxury brand committed to diversity, is the presenting sponsor for the red-carpet gala celebration. Hilton Hotels & Resorts (www.hilton.com), the flagship brand of Hilton Worldwide, also serves as a sponsor for the evening. Hilton will host the event in the International Ballroom at The Beverly Hilton from 7:00 – 10:00 p.m. Black Label Events (www.blacklabelevents.com) will produce the celebration under the creative leadership of partners Carl Rumbaugh and Mel Berman. DJ Beau Dasher will provide the night’s entertainment.

“The growth and success of The Advocate is due, in no small part, to the efforts of its publishers and editors to nurture and develop the many talents of the LGBTQ community,” said Jorge Valencia, Executive Director & CEO Point Foundation. “Point Foundation Scholars are the next generation of leaders; the names and faces that will appear — with great pride — in The Advocate for decades to come.”

Advocate.com Attacked Prior to Proposition 8 Decision

The world’s largest LGBT news website was attacked moments before a federal appeals court has ruled California’s Proposition 8 unconstitutional

February 8, 2012 (LOS ANGELES) — Shortly before 10 a.m. Pacific time yesterday, just moments before a federal appeals court upheld U.S. district judge Vaughn Walker’s ruling that California’s Proposition 8 was unconstitutional, Advocate.com was victim of an intentional Denial of Service (DOS) attack. The attack came in two intervals and lasted approximately 20 minutes each.

“Yesterday, as LGBT Americans awaited the federal appeals court decision regarding California’s Prop. 8 case, an outside source launched a DOS attack on Advocate.com,” said Stephen Macias, Here Media’s Executive Vice President and General Manager. “Our technical team moved swiftly to remedy the situation and provide our readers quick access to one of the most important LGBT news stories in recent memory.”

The Advocate.com technical team moved quickly to resolve the issue by tracing and then blocking the IP address associated with the attack. While there was no permanent damage to the site, some viewers’ access to the site was limited during the attack.

Host Jim Morrison uncovers the truth about where politicians and activists stand on issues important to gay Americans

November 21, 2011 (NEW YORK) — here! TV (www.heretv.com), the world’s leading premium gay television network, has begun production on the new original series For & Against. Progressive commentator Jim Morrison hosts the new 30-minute political analysis series. For & Against debuts in January 2012 exclusively on here! TV and here! Online, here! TV’s premium online subscription video player found at http://premium.heretv.com/.

“As we gear up for the 2012 election, we felt it was imperative to provide our audience with a show that would speak directly to the LGBT population around politics, politicians, and policies,” says Josh Rosenzweig, here! TV’s Senior Vice President of Original Programming & Development. “Jim Morrison is a one-of-a-kind renaissance man — brilliant, fearless and trustworthy — who will undoubtedly get the answers to the hard questions and let us all feel confident that we are properly armed with the right information to make the best decisions.”

For & Against offers here! TV viewers the chance to explore news and headlines through a uniquely LGBT lens. Each episode features Morrison digging deeper into the issues to focus on how everything from campaign finance to current and future White House policy affects the LGBT community. Additionally, Morrison sits down with top policymakers and pundits spanning the political landscape and challenges them on the issues that influence LGBT voters.

While Morrison brings a progressive voice to the show, For & Against extends across the political spectrum. As the 2012 primary election season begins, For & Against is extending invites to each candidate running in the 2012 Republican primaries to join Morrison to discuss their platform on issues important to LGBT Americans.

Morrison is a liberal-leaning pundit not afraid to challenge convention. He is a graduate of the Georgetown School of Foreign Service and holds a law degree from Columbia University, with an emphasis on Constitutional Law and Civil Rights. Jim ran for the New Jersey State Senate and successfully litigated the first sexual orientation discrimination case against a high school student. Additionally, he was a finalist on the first season of the reality series The Mole and was, subsequently, the first openly gay man to be placed on People magazine’s “Most Eligible Bachelor” list.

World’s leading gay media company partners with GLAAD to show support for LGBT youth and take a stand against anti-LGBT bullying

October 19, 2011 (LOS ANGELES)Here Media (www.heremedia.com), the world’s leading gay media company, is proud to partner with GLAAD, the nation’s lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender media advocacy and anti-defamation organization, for its second annual “Spirit Day.” On October 20, 2011, Here Media will turn the logos for its network of websites purple to show support for LGBT youth and remember those lost to suicide. The purple logos will appear on Advocate.com, Out.com, OutTraveler.com, Gay.com, Gay.net, and SheWired.com.

Here Media is proud to show support for a new generation of LGBT Americans – our future leaders – who are taking a stand against the horrific anti-gay bullying leading so many to prematurely take their lives,” said Stephen Macias, Here Media’s Executive Vice President and General Manager. “We thank GLAAD for educating, inspiring, and mobilizing people to make a difference in the lives of those who are being harassed simply for being who they are.”

Teenager Brittany McMillan started Spirit Day in 2010. Now, as part of National Bullying Prevention Month, GLAAD is working with millions of LGBT Americans and allies, as well as numerous organizations, to inspire individuals, schools, corporations, media professionals, and celebrities to wear purple, which symbolizes spirit on the rainbow flag.

Dionne Warwick Graces Cover of HIV Plus Magazine

Grammy-winning entertainment icon and activist covers the November/December issue of the health and wellness magazine

September 22, 2011 (LOS ANGELES)Here Media (www.heremedia.com), the world’s leading gay media company, is pleased to announce that Grammy Award-winning recording artist Dionne Warwick will cover the November/December issue of HIV Plus magazine. Her cover appearance comes on the heels of her work hosting the Town Hall Meeting on HIV & AIDS—in association with Harlem United Community AIDS Center—called “That's What Friends Are For.”

"We're thrilled to feature Ms. Warwick, as everyone who knows her calls her, on the November/December cover of HIV Plus," says Editor in Chief Diane Anderson-Minshall. "New York has declared Sept. 27 Dionne Warwick Day, but for anyone who has seen the impact Warwick has had on AIDS fundraising and visibility, one day isn't enough to celebrate this tireless advocate. Back in the late '80s, after her song ‘That's What Friends Are For' came out, Dionne organized a four-day extravaganza to benefit AIDS education and pediatric AIDS care, one of the earliest of its kind. Frank Sinatra famously quipped at the time, 'When Dionne first told me about it, I said, 'Anytime, anywhere, and what do I wear?' That's the same excitement that Ms. Warwick brought to being on the cover of HIV Plus magazine, an anywhere, anytime spirit our readers will appreciate."

Warwick has been and continues to be a pioneer in the fight against HIV/AIDS.

Warwick's tireless efforts date back to the early '80s, when she was one of the first African-American celebrities to align herself with the fight against this epidemic, bringing attention to the plight, not only domestically, but internationally as well. Warwick’s pioneering efforts have focused on leading the music industry in the fight against AIDS. Her Grammy-winning, chart topping single "That's What Friends Are For," led the way by raising millions of dollars for AIDS research. Additionally, in 2002, Warwick was honored by the American Red Ribbon AIDS Foundation.

Warwick’s Town Hall Meeting on HIV & AIDS takes place on Monday, September 26, 2011, at 6:00 p.m. The session will be moderated by BET News commentator Ed Gordon. Gordon will be joined by acclaimed actress/singer/activist Sheryl Lee Ralph and other celebrity friends, noted clinicians, politicians, and persons living with HIV and AIDS. The Town Hall Meeting will take place at the Oberia D. Dempsey Center at 127 West 127th Street.

Here Media Begins International Expansion

OUT, the world’s leading gay fashion and lifestyle brand, launches print publication in Greece

August 30, 2011 (LOS ANGELES)Here Media (www.heremedia.com), the world’s leading gay media company, today announced the international expansion of its iconic LGBT brands. Beginning with the December 2011 issue, Here Media and Greek publisher G. Piliouras, Ltd., will produce a Greek-language edition of OUT magazine. G. Piliouras, Ltd., will collaborate with OUT Editor in Chief Aaron Hicklin to translate the brand’s leading fashion, style, and pop culture content for the Greek marketplace.

“With a burgeoning gay audience in Greece, OUT’s Greek-language version provides the perfect outlet for a consumer not currently being reached by local publications. G. Piliouras’s knowledge and experience makes them the ideal partner to help facilitate the international expansion of the Here Media brands,” said Stephen Macias, Here Media’s Executive Vice President and General Manager, who will be leading the company’s international business development. “We are in the process of securing international agreements for the various Here Media brands and platforms, including print, digital, and mobile. This expansion also creates a unique opportunity for our advertising partners to showcase their brands to new and affluent audiences worldwide.”

Under a new licensing agreement with Athens-based G. Piliouras, Ltd., the sophisticated fashion, style, and pop culture content of OUT’s U.S. edition will be translated and edited for the Greek audience. Additionally, G. Piliouras, Ltd., will utilize European journalists to produce content of local interest, including interviews with Greek personalities, music and entertainment reviews, and local travel coverage creating Greece’s first mainstream LGBT print publication.

Following the premiere issue, OUT’s Greek edition will publish on the same 10 times per year schedule as the U.S. publication. OUT’s Greek edition will be available on Greek newsstands and at local retailers as well as via subscription.

“The strategy of G. Piliouras, Ltd., is to detect the gaps that exist in publications in the Greek market and to fill those gaps with the best foreign titles. The LGBT community in Greece is in need of its own publication that will cover its needs and interests. Looking for the most suitable LGBT foreign publication, and after a thorough study of dozens of foreign titles, we came to the conclusion that OUT magazine was the best choice, as it is the most successful LGBT magazine in the world, but most importantly for us, a magazine of very high standards and quality. With the Greek edition of OUT we feel that the Greek LGBT community will finally have the publication it needs and deserves to have,” said George Piliouras, General Manager of the Greek publishing house.

G. Piliouras, Ltd., has proven success in bringing U.S. titles to the Greek market. The Greek publisher already produces Greek editions of titles including FitnessRX for Men, FitnessRX for Women, and Muscular Development.

The OUT brand’s new international licensing agreement follows Here Media’s recent expansion of its online properties with the new Web portal Gay.net, featuring the latest headlines from the worlds of entertainment, travel, style, and cultural hot topics.

Join The Advocate for the 2nd Annual “A Day in Gay America”

On August 12, The Advocate invites readers to share a slice of their everyday lives

August 9, 2011 (LOS ANGELES)The Advocate, the world’s leading gay news source, wants a photo of your life on Friday, August 12, 2011. Join The Advocate for the second annual “A Day in Gay America” by taking a snapshot with your family or friends or on your own, at work or at play, having adventures or experiencing a quiet moment of solace—anything from the mundane to the insane, from the glamorous to the gritty. The best photographs taken on that single day in the United States, as determined by the editors of The Advocate, will be featured in a photo essay called “A Day in Gay America” on Advocate.com and in the November 2011 print issue of The Advocate.

“In 2010 we received photographs from people of all ages and backgrounds, and from all parts of this country,” said Matthew Breen, The Advocate’s Editor in Chief. “This project is like an enormous family photo album, and it’s a joy to see so many of the different ways we live our lives as LBGTs in America. It’s vital, especially for younger people and for those just coming out, to know there’s no one way to be gay. We can find strength in our diversity, and sharing these images is a wonderful way to demonstrate how diverse we are.”

To participate in “A Day in Gay America,” you don’t need to be a professional photographer! Just make a note on your calendar, get your camera ready, and on Friday, August 12, 2011, take a self-portrait or have a friend take a photograph of you, doing anything that says something about who you are as an LGBT American.

The instructions are simple, but hi-resolution images are required for print, so please read carefully:

Step 1: Go to the menu on your digital camera and set the photo resolution (or file size) to its highest setting (or largest file size, up to but not more than 10 MB). Photos that are low-res don’t print well, so we can’t use them in the print magazine, only online. Low-resolution photos will automatically be considered for Advocate.com.

Step 2: Take that picture any time between 12:00 a.m. and 11:59 p.m. on Friday, August 12, 2011.

Step 3: Go to www.Advocate.com/DayInGayAmerica and upload your photo no later than Wednesday, August 17.

Print photos must be 4 n x 6in (1,800 x 1,200 pixels) 300dpi JPEG file no larger than 5MB. Please no TIFF or EPS files.

Terms and conditions for “A Day in Gay America” photo submissions can be found at: http://www.advocate.com/DayInGayAmerica/

This summer-long initiative celebrates dynamic personalities, wild nights on the town, summer fun, and up-to-the-moment electronic music. Five promoters – Joshua J, Tom Whitman, Matthew Harvat, Tony Ferro, and Brandon and Tony of FV Events – will host five distinct events nationwide, including parties in Chicago, San Francisco, Los Angeles, South Beach, and Manhattan.

Stoli is thrilled to be a part of Out’s Night Hawks event series, furthering the brand’s ongoing support of the gay community,” says Jaime Gorman, Stoli Brand Manager. “Through this partnership, Stoli will interact with some of the gay community’s most influential tastemakers and local celebrities.”

The new custom content channel focuses on the comings and goings of five popular party promoters. All five promoters update their blogs weekly with delicious party pictures, DJ Top Ten playlists, and their own personal and dish-y nightlife journals, which offer a rare glimpse into their dreams, dramas, and discos. These Night Hawks give readers a taste of life after dark: freewheeling, wild at heart, and truly fly-by-night.

The Night Hawks event series kicks off on Wednesday, July 27, 2011, at Chicago’s popular Sidetrack Nightclub (www.sidetrackchicago.com) in the heart of Boystown. Hosted by promoter extraordinaire Matthew Harvat and presented by Out and Stoli, the exclusive event will bring together Chicago tastemakers for a celebration of Chicago nightlife.

The Night Hawk events will then move to the West Coast with parties in San Francisco and Los Angeles, before returning to the East to visit South Beach and Manhattan.
